Our wonderful new Cos
Meet Dalys
- How long have you been in the disability sector, and the roles you have been in? I have worked in the disability and supports sector since I was roughly 19 years old which means I am quickly approaching my 20th year! I have worked in various roles including as a nursing assistant in aged care, community care worker, divisional therapist, a support worker for generalised clients as well as high intensity mental health supports, as well as my work as a CoS. Although there have been various roles, they all centre around service to others and supporting people to maintain their independence.
- How long have you been a CoS and the best thing about being a CoS? I have worked in the scope of a CoS since 2021, since returning to work following a car accident. I had always found the role intriguing and a way to make real lasting change in a person’s life, so once I was given the opportunity to learn, I jumped in feet first and fell in love with the role. Everyday has the potential to challenge any coordinator, but I have a real love for research and resolving complex issues, which enables me to then work through reducing or removing barriers that were previously in a person’s way to achieving their goals.
- Favourite way to spend the weekend? My family often take road trips to Sydney for concerts and sporting events, but when we are home, we are home bodies who like to recharge at home for the week ahead!
- Favourite Snack? I am a very big fan of almost anything made from potato, but if I am in the mood for something sweet, peppermint chocolate and ice-cream would top the list!
Our wonderful new community access coordinator
Meet Jenna
- What made you get into the disability sector? I’ve always had a strong desire to help others and bring some happiness and laughter into the lives of people around me.
- How long have you been in the disability sector and the roles you have been in? I started as a support worker when I finished school in 2019, since then I have worn a few hats, Youth Coordinator, Team leader, Administration and currently the Community Access Coordinator for MTH (my favourite role so far!)
- Favourite way to spend your weekend? Hanging out with my friends and (not so small) Puppy – Sadie
- Favourite meal? A Bacon and Egg roll
Be sure to say hello if you see these two wonderful ladies around the MTH office! If you’d like to get in contact with them, be sure to send an email to Hello@mytreehouse.com.au
Hunter Disability Expo
MTH had the honour of participating in the 2024 Hunter Disability Expo, and it was a resounding success. We had the opportunity to meet numerous new faces, reconnect with familiar ones, and establish connections with other service providers. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Impact Institute for hosting yet another fantastic expo. We eagerly anticipate the 2025 expo!
NDIS 101: A Beginners Guide
The National Disability Insurance Scheme is Australia’s flagship program for supporting individuals within Australia with disabilities, below is a quick overview:
The purpose is to empower individuals with disabilities by providing them with unique supports to enhance one’s independence and participation in society.
To qualify for the individuals must have a significant and or permanent disability, be under the age of 65, be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or hold a Protected Special Category Vias.
How does it work?
The operates under a participant-centred model, allowing individuals the freedom to select the supports and services that align with their unique needs and objectives. After meeting eligibility criteria, participants engage in a planning process with a coordinator to craft a personalized plan. This plan delineates the participant’s ambitions, goals, and the necessary supports to accomplish them.
Once the plan receives approval, participants gain access to funding for procuring the outlined supports and services. These may encompass personal care, therapeutic interventions, assistive technology, and community engagement activities. Participants enjoy autonomy in selecting service providers and managing their funds according to their preferences and requirements.
